Peter Hauri, an immigrant, a father, a proponent of making education available to anyone who wants it, a National Achievement Award recipient for his work in insomnia and sleep disorders. Although there are already awards in my dad's name, and benefits for sleep disorders and those who study them, I know my dad had other passions as well. He was a fantastic dad, who was always in the background as a supporter, and a cheerleader. He was even a silent partner when I decided I needed to own my own business. I know he was proud of me and those like me, who get in the trenches, try to learn everything they can and then continue their education because they follow the beats of the horses hooves with their hearts.
My dad was a big advocate of education and how we can use that to be our best selves. He and I often talked about the limits we found as horse people based upon our budget for purchase. He always wanted to find ways to make education easy to access in hopes that would encourage a better chance for opportunities.
I saw many horses who were no longer meeting the needs of their owners in the show ring as a higher level horse, a hunter/jumper or an eventer who may have lost the ability to progress up the levels due to age, injury, or any other reason, just fall by the wayside. We all know it is a hard fact to face when your current horse isn't working out, for you. But your beloved horse just might be exactly what another rider is dreaming of. With this non profit, started as a way to promote an affordable training spot, but morphed into a way to promote affordable horses for learning, horses can be donated, go through an assessment process, and then trained for a second career. Then the horses are offered for lease. A typical lease fee may be around $5,000 per year. These horses are high quality, well bred and very well trained horses who then become available for a new rider to learn from, and grow with. The hopes are that the riders can get access to horses of higher quality than they may have been able to with out this non profit. The horses are leased out on a yearly basis, although riders can renew their leases as long as the horses are kept healthy, safe, and HAPPY in their work. If a rider falls in love with their partner a sale is possible after the three year period. The lease fees are used to support new members (horses) of the non profit, and any fees left over are then put into a scholarship for riders who are heading into an equine based business.
We hope to see these riders find success that they may not have been able to achieve without their new partner, and horses find success in their new job, and new partnership. We also hope this helps build the pipeline for new, more educated young professionals in our equine industry!
